National Walking Day – Perfect Day for a Walking Desk

This might just be our favorite day of the year here at Rebel Desk. Today is National Walking Day! 

What exactly is National Walking Day? Here’s the lowdown from the American Heart Association:

These days, adults are spending more time at work than ever before. An unfortunate side effect is that, as a nation, we’re becoming more inactive. This is a problem when you consider that physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease!

But take heart! It’s a problem you can help fix by encouraging your community and company to take part in the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day.
On this day, Americans are encouraged to lace up their sneakers and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It’s a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to get your family, friends and co-workers started on a healthier way of life.

As the American Heart Association recognizes, more Americans are working longer hours and becoming less active. Studies show that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women are at risk for heart disease, and inactivity is a major reason why. A sedentary lifestyle also can cause back and neck pain, blood clots, stroke, and increase your cancer risk. Believe it or not, even a regular exercise routine may not cancel out the negative effects from long periods of inactivity.

The American Heart Association is shining light on this important health hazard by encouraging everyone to walk 30 minutes today. If you already have a walking desk from Rebel Desk, then hitting 30 minutes of walking is no problem. If you don’t have a walking desk yet, visit to download a tool kit on how you could get your office moving today. A few tips include:
Try walking meetings. Make a loop round the office building. Discuss your daily tasks while moving. You’ll come back feeling energized and ready to tackle the rest of the day.

Pace during a conference call. The other line doesn’t know you’re moving around, so that might be a good time to put in a half hour of walking.

If you can swing it, bring a dog to the office! You’ll be forced to take the pooch out for exercise and breaks, which restarts your mind every time.

Okay, so an office dog may not be a solution for everyone. But a walking desk can be that solution!
