National Walking Day- Are You Getting Your Steps In?


Today is National Walking Day! Ready to get your steps in?

The American Heart Association is putting the focus back on walking on April 6, 2016 as a reminder that we need to walk more and keep our hearts healthy. What better way to get served a reminder that even during the the workweek it is possible to just “Lace Up and Go.” Encourage your coworkers, friends, and family to take some time out of the day to make a dent in that 10,000 step a day recommendation! So why the need for National Walking Day?

These days, adults are spending more time at work than ever before. An unfortunate side effect is that we’re becoming more inactive during and after work. This is a problem when you consider that physical inactivity doubles the risk of heart disease. As the American Heart Association recognizes, more Americans are working longer hours and becoming less active.

Studies show that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women are at risk for heart disease, and sitting in a chair for 8 plus hours could be a significant contributing factor. A sedentary lifestyle also can cause back and neck pain, blood clots, stroke, and increase your cancer risk. Believe it or not, even a regular exercise routine may not cancel out the negative effects from long periods of inactivity.

The American Heart Association is shining light on this important health hazard by encouraging everyone to walk 30 minutes today. A few tips to get you moving

Try walking meetings. Make a loop round the office building. Discuss your daily tasks while moving. You’ll come back feeling energized and ready to tackle the rest of the day.

Pace during a conference call. The other line doesn’t know you’re moving around, so that might be a good time to put in a half hour of walking.

If you can swing it, bring a dog to the office! You’ll be forced to take the pooch out for exercise and breaks, which restarts your mind every time.Okay, so an office dog may not be a solution for everyone. But a walking desk can be that solution!
