5 Tips for Managing Stress at Work

Work-related stress is exhausting. Not only can it cause anxiety, illness, and the occasional talking in your sleep, it can be a barrier to enjoying your job. We put together some tips on managing stress at work so you enjoy your job more and feel better when you step away from your desk.

1. Breath – When the going gets tough, there’s nothing like a few deep breaths to help you reset. When you take a few deep breaths, tell yourself that it will be okay. Because, guess what? It will! 2. Socialize– Take some time to talk with your coworkers about non-work related topics. If you work alone or do not have peers in your office, schedule lunch with a friend who works nearby. More people than ever before are taking their lunch back to their desks to continue working. Missing this valuable time to take a break, enjoy someone’s company, and set can be a mistake. Just like our bodies were not meant to sit all day, our brains were not meant to focus on work all day. 3. Clear your space– Clutter on your desk can clutter your mind. Organization is key to keeping your day stress-free. If you’re scrambling to find the papers you printed for your report at the last minute, it’s time to do some cleanup. Feeling stressed right before your big presentation? Next time, try clearing your area the morning of and see how that makes you feel. While presentation jitters might not go away, your mind won’t be wondering if you left that analysis spreadsheet underneath your lunch leftovers.

4. Listen to music – Music sends happy signals to your brain. While classical music might be relaxing for some, others might prefer rock or the occasional top-20 selection.
